Where are we?

​

The Shaka Surf Club is based in the small fishing village of Kodi Bengre in Karnataka, on the west coast of India. We also have a Shaka Shack where our students can relax, read and watch surf movies in between surf sessions. Since there are no accommodation options right at the beach, our students usually stay in the university town of Manipal, which is a short 20 minute drive away from the beach.

 

How to get here?

 

By Train: Manipal is just 10 mins away from Udupi Railway Station

By Bus: Any bus that goes to Manipal or Udupi

By Flight: Nearest airport is in Mangalore, that is 1.5 hours away from Manipal.

 

When is the surf season? 

 

Surfing isn’t about who can catch the biggest wave. It’s about riding any kind of wave the ocean sends you and having fun doing so! Any time, other than the monsoon season is a good time to learn how to surf in India.

Our surf spot is perfect for beginners - The waves here are non- intimidating, our beach has no reef or rocks and you can also spot plenty of dolphins while surfing!

For advanced level surfers, the best time for surfing in India is pre and post monsoon season. The months of April to June and September to October hold the biggest swell, with waves reaching up to 15 feet high.

 

Where do I stay?

There are plenty of accommodation options in and around Manipal, depending on your budget. The Shaka Surf Club takes care of transportation from Manipal to the beach location. Manipal has plenty of budget hotel rooms suitable for students, with prices starting at Rs. 500 a night.

For those looking to stay close to the beach, they can stay at Thonse Nature Cure Centre which is just 5 mins away from the beach. They offer yoga and a range of natural therapy treatments, (massages, reflexology etc) as well as accommodation at very reasonable prices. Another option is Paradise Lagoon Cottages, a river island resort, located 5 mins away from out surf spot. They have cottage style rooms starting at Rs.2000 per night. Also located at Malpe beach is Paradise Isle Beach Resort with luxury rooms starting at Rs. 3000 a night.

What should I wear?

​

The force of the waves can easily pull your clothes off. So, it is required that students wear a tight t-shirt or rashguard and shorts that can be tied tight with a drawstring. Since our surf school is located in a fishing village and not a touristy spot, we request our students to refrain from wearing revealing clothes such as bikinis and respect the local culture.

 

What should I bring?

​

The Shaka Surf Club will provide the surfboards and all the necessary equipment required for surfing. All you need to bring is your own bottle of water, sun block and board shorts, t-shirt and beach towel.
